Making up a Missed Class

Last updated: 1/22/05.

First, I view the class sessions as an important part of the course. I have the following goals for these class sessions:

  1. Another chance for me to emphasize what is important, both for course requirements and for course content.
  2. Another way to maintain contact, especially with people who are having trouble with the online format.
  3. A chance to solve course-related problems and clarify course software and assignments.
  4. The University requires that you have some in-class time to fill out the Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) near the end of the semester, and I wholeheartedly support this. While the University does offer an online version of SET, I have never had a single student complete one. In this class, SET will be during the last regular class session.
  5. Of course, for those taking ISP 3340, the Final Exam will be face-to-face. This is because 50% of the grade for the Final Exam will come from face-to-face group work. (Teamwork is expected to be a big part of the future, and this course will emphasize experiences relevant to expectations of the future.)

The class sessions will be full of content, so please make every effort to be on hand by 6 PM on class nights.

People who attend a class will get an automatic grade of 100 for this; the equivalent grade for those who miss a class will come from the four points listed below.

  1. First, if you miss a class, part of your grade for that class will a grade for getting work done promptly, for the period starting with the missed class, and ending with the next class. This is to demonstrate to me that you are capable of working on your own, in a disciplined manner, without attending classes.
  2. Second, the PowerPoint that I will use to organize and pace the class will be available online, and you will be expected to read that. If you do not have access to Microsoft PowerPoint, I will mail or FAX a copy of the notes to you.
  3. Third, you will be expected to contact other students to get any additions to or deviations from the Powerpoint.
  4. Fourth, you are assigned to turn in a one-page summary of the class content, excluding any material in the notes that was not actually covered, and including any additional material covered that was not in the class notes, to demonstrate that you have the information from the class.
