St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John make up the Virgin Islands. St. Thomas is the second largest and and the most cosmopolitan of this chain of islands. You can find just about everything in accommodations from $30 a night stay at a small inn. St. Thomas (13 miles long, 3 miles wide), half the size of St. Croix, is capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands and it is there that the governor and legislature conduct their business. Charlotte Amalie's deep-water harbor, one teeming with four master trading ships now plays host to visiting cruise ships and an impressive fleet of sail and power boats. Dozens of mini islands and cays encircle St. Thomas and St. John and add to the impressive scenery. Some are merely points on navigational charts, others have snippets of history and a few are populated. St. Thomas is the largest and the most cosmopolitan of this chain of islands. Like St. Croix, it has many associations with the Danes and retains much Danish influence. The main town, Charlotte Amalie, is the groups' capital. Imported goods from all over the world make it a marvelous shopping centre and stores tucked into remodeled Danish warehouses line each side of the picturesque Main Street.
