Using WS_FTP LE
FTP Client

WS_FTP LE (Light Edition) is a free user-friendly FTP Client for Windows, that you can use for uploading and downloading eCommerce class files.

Download and installation

You can download WS_FTP LE from the WSU software download center at http://support.wayne.edu/allwsu/software/support/index.php

(Mac users can download the Fetch FTP client from the same location.)

Scroll down and click on the WS_FTP LE link, and follow directions. You will have to supply your AccessID and Password. The file that you download is Ipswitch_WSFTP-Limited_5[1].08_Win.exe. If you are using Netscape for the download, some versions will download the file with a .php at the end end of the name; i.e. Ipswitch_WSFTP-Limited_5[1].08_Win.exe.php. In this case, download and change the file name to remove the .php before proceeding.

Save the file in any convenient folder. The exe file that you end up with is the installation file; after downloading, use Windows Explorer or any other file management software to display the file, and double-click on the file name to install the actual program.

Using WS_FTP LE

WS_FTP starts with its Session dialog, where you choose the FTP server to connect to. For eCommerce, click on the New button, type in the information shown above (use your own FTP User Name, of course) and click the Apply button to save this for future use. (I never like programs to memorize my passwords; not supplying one here will result in being prompted for a password by the server when you connect.)

The best setting for Host Type is "Automatic detect"; that way the program will figure out what works. After you have set up a session and clicked Apply to save it, click OK to start it. Again, if you follow my recommendation and do not have the program remember your password, you will be prompted for one at this point. The figure below shows the WS_FTP working window.

As the labels say, the left window shows files on the local computer (the one you are sitting at) and the right window shows files on the remote computer, the FTP server you are connected to. In each window, you can change drives, change folders and select files. If you have a selected in either window, you can view it (but not change it), rename it, or delete it. Click on a file to select it, and click on the appropriate arrow to upload (local to remote) or download (remote to local) it.

Drag on the right border of this window to enlarge the remote window, and drag on the light border that the arrow points to to enlarge the local window (generally after enlarging the remote window first).

WS_FTP will work  V-E-R-Y   S-L-O-W-L-Y  until you click on the Options button, make sure that the Session tab is selected, unclick Use Passive Transfer Mode and click OK, as shown below.

Otherwise, the default options work very well. This is a great program.
