      1. Common web site for both courses. Sections are:
        1. Announcements

        1. Re-read a message you have read before
        2. Read your list of new messages, mark it as read
        3. Post, Reply and Reply/Quote
      3. There is an online manual on the course web site
  3. The Internet in the News
    1. In New York City, a company called DigiScents demonstrated iSmell, its system for delivering computer-controlled aromas to users. The system controls the amount of 128 basic scents to produce specific odors. The system is projected to go on sale early next year, at a cost of $50 to $200. Other companies also have or are preparing similar products. AromaJet.com works with videogame companies to add the sense of smell to their games. TriSenx is developing MultiSSENX which it plans to sell for less than $25, and FirstSENX for users to print scent cards and to flavor thin sheets of potato starch.
    2. A report prepared by the congressional General Accounting Office at the request of legislators criticized Federal web sites for not following the privacy standards suggested by Federal Trade Commission (FTC); only 3% of the Federal web sites were found to follow all four of the standards. The White House replied that the Federal web sites followed the requirements of the Privacy Act of 1974, and internal rules, not the FTC standards. The four FTC standards and the percentage of Federal web sites meeting each are:
      1. (85%) A web site should disclose its information practices before soliciting information from a user.
      2. (45%) Users should be allowed to choose whether their information can be used for secondary purposes such as generating marketing mailing lists
      3. (17%) Users should be able to view the information stored about them, and to correct wrong or incomplete information
      4. (24%) The web site should provide adequate safeguards for unauthorized use of personal information
    3. A new type of dating service uses cell phones. The position of a cell phone can be triangulated by translating the relative delays from cell antennas. Two subscribers in the same vicinity with compatible characteristics will be beeped (the cell phones must be turned on at the time). They can then use a phone conversation to decide whether or not to meet in person.
  4. Common elements in Windows - go to handout / Windows common elements
  5. The Internet - go to handout / The Internet: Structure, Function and Applications
    1. But first - some practical experience. Tracert first.
      1. Go to the Start button and click on Run...
      2. In the text line, type in cmd and tap the <Enter> key. You will get a black window with a C:> prompt.
      3. Type tracert 141.217.142.149 and tap the <Enter> key. (That's a space after "tracert".)
      4. You will see the list of hops from your computer to the CLL web server (141.217.142.149).
      5. Try another address or domain name, such as www.ibm.com to see that list of hops.
    2. The speed of your Internet connection is determined by the slowest link - often, which one is busiest at that time.
    3. Now, ping, the most basic Internet function
      1. Go to the Start button and click on Run...
      2. In the text line, type in cmd and tap the <Enter> key. You will get a black window with a C:> prompt.
      3. Type ping 141.217.142.149 and tap the <Enter> key. (That's a space after "ping".)
      4. You will see the roundtrip time from your computer to the CLL web server. This is an excellent test of whether the server is up and running, or perhaps your Internet connection has failed.
  6. Word Processing overview - go to handout / Word Processing. Also includes using Word to create your personal web page
  7. Uploading your personal web page and any pictures to the web server
    1. HTML file

      2. On that web page, for personal web pages, the User Name is inetf00 and the password is stustu. Leave "Destination Web Site" at "all"
      3. Click the Browse button. This will open up the File Upload dialog
      4. In the File Upload dialog, navigate to your folder, select the HTML file and click Save
      5. On the web page, click Upload Now
    2. Picture files
      1. The only difference is that in the File Upload dialog, you will have to change Files of type... to All Files (*.*)
