Creativity: Building the New

Opting out of the initial class meeting by
demonstrating Internet access and proficiency

and completing an additional assignment

You do not need to attend the first class meeting of the Creativity course if you complete the following before Wednesday, January 16 (the date of the first course meeting):

  1. World Wide Web access:
    1. Access this web page and carry out the instructions below
  2. Email:
    1. Send an initial email to the Instructor, David Bowen, at drbowen@cll.wayne.edu
    2. Receive a return email with an attachment
      NOTE: Some free email accounts, such as Juno, do not permit email attachments. You cannot opt out of the initial class meeting if you cannot send and receive email attachments. WSU email accounts do allow email attachments. If your email account allows it, you can send and receive email attachments using the following software:
      1. Eudora (I can provide assistance)
      2. Netscape Navigator or Communicator  (I can provide assistance)
      3. Microsoft Internet Explorer (I can provide assistance)
      4. Most other email programs (I may be able to provide assistance)
      5. Extract the attachment, which will describe changes that you should make to the attachment
    3. Email the changed document back to the instructor
  3. Computer conferencing. Using this system requires only general World Wide Web access.
    NOTE: If you are not familiar with the ISP/CLL conferencing system, you may want to print these directions out before trying to access the system.
    1. Follow this Internet link to the ISP/CLL computer conferencing system.
    2. Supply your own User Name and Password to log in to the computer conferencing system.
      1. If you have an existing account on this conferencing system from a previous course, use that User Name and Password
      2. Otherwise, make up your own User Name and Paassword, record them, and use them to make the initial log in to this conferencing system
    3. Email the Instructor (use email address above) to say that you have made the initial log in. The Instructor will then make you a member of the computer conference for the Creativity course.
    4. Log in a second time, select the computer conference for this course (the link will not be visible until the Instructor has made you a member), read the messages there, and post one of your own in response.
  4. Additional assignment:
    1. On the course web site, read the translated description by Henri Poincaré of his own creative work in mathematics. Write a one-page essay describing the steps in Poincare's creative process, and email it to the instructor. The essay should have
      1. a descriptive title (a title that describes the contents)
      2. a brief introduction
      3. a description of Poincaré's creative process
      4. a conclusion describing the significance of Poincaré's description
    2. email your essay to the Instructor as an attachment
