AGS 3360 Additional Assignment

Students who want Upper Division credit for Computers and Society should be registered
for AGS 3360 instead of GST 2710. GST 2710 is the Lower Division version of Computers and
Society. The requirements for AGS 3360 are the same as the requirements for GST2710, with
an additional assignment. This additional assignment can take one of two forms:
- Six-page paper on a social issue in the area of Computers and Society
OR
- Addition to Web Site for Computers and Society course.
Whichever assignment you choose, it will require some work throughout the semester,
with interim submissions. For this reason, last-minute changes will not be allowed. Make
your choices carefully! Feel free to discuss them with the Instructor.
The requirements for the paper are:
- Subject is a social issue in the area of Computers and Society, either on the Web Page
or another issue
- Six pages minimum
- Written for the general reader, e.g. for a magazine, NOT just for this course
- Both print and Microsoft Works diskette forms submitted
- Essay form:
- Title that describes the content (e.g. NOT Computers and Society Essay)
- One-paragraph Introduction that describes what the reader will find in the essay; a road
map
- Body that describes the issue, incorporates the references from the Bibliography,
includes application to specific cases and includes opinions and recommendations from the
author and others
- Conclusion that summarizes the whole paper, states the authors conclusions about the
issue, and demonstrates closure on the issue
- Bibliography with a minimum of three library references and three references from the
Internet. Internet references should include the URL in addition to standard bibliographic
information.
- Schedule:
- February 3. Choice of assignment and initial choice of topic. If not on Web Page,
requires approval of Instructor. Can be submitted either in writing or by email.
- March 3. List of references to be used. Can be submitted either in writing or by
email.
Last day to change topic
- March 24. Outline of paper. Can be submitted either in writing or by email.
- April 7. First draft of paper. Can be submitted either in writing or by email.
- April 21. Final copy of paper, printed and diskette forms. Can be submitted
either in writing or by email
The requirements for an addition to Web Site:
The addition can be either an explanation of an existing area of content, such as
binary arithmetic, or a presentation of a social issue. Schedule:
- Febrary 3. Choice of assignment and choice of topic. Topic requires approval of
Instructor.
- March 3. Sketch of layout for Web Pages. List of resources to be used. This
includes resources for content, and software resource for creation of Web Pages. Describe
how you will learn to use this software.
- March 24. Detailed draft of Web Pages
- April 21. April 7. Final version of Web Pages in HTML format
