Ninth class: Agenda 9
Wednesday March 19

  1. Announcements
    1. Handouts: (a) Agenda 9, (b) Quiz 2 topics, (c) Logic Gates, and (d) Logic Gates Homework. Also, we will continue with The Internet handout.
    2. Reminder: sign in at the beginning of class; sign out at the end.
    3. You can access the course web site either through Blackboard or through the public web (no login), www.cll.wayne.edu/isp/drbowen/casw03
    4. Online grade reports are available if you have first used the Course Information Form to change the information under "GradeReports" from No to Yes. If you want to go over your grades with me, without using the Online Grade Reports, see me outside of class.
    5. Passbacks and comments. So far, the assignments are not coming in on time, except for a few people.
  2. Reminders
    1. Quiz 2 one-half hour at the beginning of class in two weeks on April 2. Quiz 2 will only cover new material since the midterm. (The Final Exam will be cumulative since the beginning of the semester.) I am not planning an in-class review for Quiz 2 (there will be one for the Final). For questions on the topics, see or call me before class, during a lab session, or by telephone or email any time.
    2. Restrictions on the number of assignments that can be turned in were supposed to start on April 2, two classes from now, but I will put this off until April 9. Starting April 9 and thereafter, only two assignments and two labs can be turned in each week. There will be a total of 14 assignments and 13 labs. Counting April 9, that leaves a total of 8 assignments and 8 labs that can be turned in during the last four classes and the final. By April 9 and each week thereafter, in order to turn in all of the work for this course, you must have turned in at least six assignments and five labs on Wednesday. In addition, if you are putting these off, you will need to keep to a strict schedule of two assignments and two labs each week by April 9. Plus, what about time for studying for Quiz 2 and the Final? Time to get moving! Check what you have that is overdue, and set up a plan. Check online for what you have do, or check with me.
    3. Web page is due next week; see Agenda 5 Item VII for how to do this, Agenda 2 Item II.C.1 for suggestions on content. the web page can be as part of the Lab Period this week or next week.
    4. Essay is due April 23; see Agenda 2 Item II.C.2 for details.
  3. Topics we will cover in class tonight:
    1. Review of Midterm
    2. Internet
      1. (Review) IP address, structure of an Internet packet
      2. (Review) Domain Name Servers, domain names
      3. Internet applications
        1. Clients and servers
        2. Email; email addresses
        3. World Wide Web ("web"), http, HTML, URLs
    3. Logic Gates
  4. Review of Midterm
    1. Grades were curved up slightly - before curving average = 74.9, after curving (the one that counts) average = 80.3
    2. First question (decimal to binary conversion) had worst score. If you did badly on this you need to get help with it.
    3. Second question (binary multiplication) had best score, but if you did badly on this you need to get help with it.
    4. Switches. Most people missed the first row of the switch problem - 0, 0.
    5. Path and URL caused trouble, particularly file name and extension. These two are separated by the dot.
      c:\My Documents\gst2710\Agenda_9.htm
    6. Many people had trouble making folders and sub-folders, especially c:\Michigan\Detroit
    7. Paragraph formatting in Word caused many problems - space before paragraph, indenting first line. NOTE that you will not see all three drop-down lists at the same time; I did this with a graphics program.

To apply paragraph formatting to an entire document, use Edit > Select All before applying the formatting. To apply paragraph formatting to most of a document, use the Edit > Select all technique, apply the formatting to the entire document, then select the parts that you did not want to format and apply the previous formatting. Or, if the parts of the document that you want to format are less than the entire document but contiguous (touching), such as everything except the title and subtitle, position the insertion point at the beginning (or end) of the part to be formatted, hold down the <Shift> key and use the down arrow and/or <page down> keys (or up arrow and/or <page up> keys) to select the part to be formatted, and then apply the formatting. The arrow keys give control at the level of lines and single characters, while the <page down> and <page up> keys move much more rapidly. An alternate method to select contiguous parts of a document, that works better for very long documents, is to position the insertion point at the beginning or end of the section, hold down the <Shift> key, scroll through the document to the other end of the section (drag the elevator box for the fastest movement), and click the mouse at the end of the section. Then release the <Shift> key.
    8. Formulas in Excel. Do the labs.
      1. Multiply cell E3 by cell D4 (* means multiplication in Excel). =E3*D4
        1. To enter this formula, (i) click on the cell to hold the formula, (ii) type "=", (iii) click on cell E3 to put its reference in the formula, (iv) type "*", (v) click on cell D4 to enter its reference, and (vi) enter the formula by tapping <Enter>, or moving to another cell by clicking or using an arrow key.
      2. Add cell E3 to cell E4 (+ or SUM). =SUM(E3:E4) OR =E3+E4
    9. If you want to look at your test diskette, you can do this during the first part of the lab period. You can also copy your files and folders to your own floppy diskette. You must turn your test diskette back in before leaving for tonight, however.
  5. The Internet (handout).
  6. Logic Gates (handout).
  7. Lab 8. Read the following steps all the way through before starting. Please label your work "Lab 8."
    1. In Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, do Excel Tutorial 3 (Blue corners, pages EX 3.01 through EX 3.35). If you are going to do this outside of this lab, make sure that you know which pages to work on before you leave class tonight. Print out your document as described and a cover sheet made using Word (see below), and save your document to your floppy diskette.
    2. In this tutorial, you start from an existing file, Pronto.xls, which you can download from the course web site or get from the CD that came with your book.
    3. Create a one-page cover sheet for your lab using Word. On the cover sheet, put:
      1. Your name
      2. This Assignment (Lab 8)
      3. Your location (Wayne County Center)
      4. The full path (drive, any folders, and filename) that you saved your Excel file with.
      5. Print out the cover sheet and staple it in front of your Excel printouts.
    4. As a result of your work in this lab, you should be able to do the following under test conditions:
      1. Start Excel, beginning with the computer off.
      2. Open an existing workbook
      3. Use the formatting toolbar for all of the attributes shown in figure 3-4 on Page 3.04.
      4. Use the following number formats: General, Number, Accounting, Date and Percentage.
      5. Use the Format Painter to copy formats from one cell to another
      6. Recognize and repair the Number Symbol (###) error
      7. Force wrapping of text within a cell, centering across cells, and indenting within a cell
      8. Change font, font size and other text attributes
      9. Clear formatting in a cell
      10. Delete cells from a worksheet
      11. Add and remove cell borders
      12. Apply background colors to cells
      13. To display the Drawing toolbar and use it to add drawing elements to a worksheet using the Drawing toolbar to add text boxes and arrows, including resizing and moving these elements
      14. Control the display of gridlines in a worksheet
      15. Force landscape or portrait page orientation, force horizontal and/or vertical page centering
      16. Insert a custom footer in a worksheet
      17. Save page setup and print a worksheet
      18. Hide and unhide worksheet columns
    5. To practice these without the detailed directions in the Tutorial, look at the Review Assignment and Case Problems on Pages EX 3.36 through 3.41.
  8. Don't forget to Sign Out!
  9. Turning your computer off
    1. Save any files that you have worked on during the class and still have open
    2. Click on "Start" then Shut Down...
    3. Make sure that "Shut down the computer" is selected and click "Yes"
    4. Wait for the dialog "It is now safe to turn off your computer.", then turn off the power using the red switch under the desktop.
