Fourteenth class: Agenda 14
Wednesday April 23

  1. Announcements
    1. The Sign In, Sign Out and Online Grade Reports are working now.
    2. The student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) will be tonight.
    3. The assignment on Agenda 10 should have been labeled Assignment 11.
    4. Handouts: (a) Agenda 14, (b) Artificial Intelligence, (c) Computer Storage and Connections
    5. The Final Exam is next week, April 30 at the regular class time (6 - 9:40 PM). The Topics sheet for material since Quiz 2 was handed last week, and is also available on the course web site. The Final will be cumulative, covering also the Topics sheets for the Midterm and Quiz 2. There will be a question-and-answer review tonight, April 23.
    6. The day of the Final, April 30, will be the last day to turn work in and have it count in the normal grade. If work is turned in after April 30, I can still count it for a later Change of Grade. If an enormous amount of work is turned in, I will grade the most recent work and put the remaining work off for a Change of Grade.
    7. You can access the course web site either through Blackboard or through the public web (no login), www.cll.wayne.edu/isp/drbowen/casw03
    8. Besides 5 - 6 PM on Wednesdays, you can find me at the office hours for my other class, 6 - 7 PM on Fridays in Room 122 Cohn on campus, diagonally across from A/AB (IS headquarters) on the intersection of Palmer and Cass. I do not stay beyond 6:45 if no one is there.
  2. Reminders
    1. Essay is due tonight, April 23; see Agenda 2 Item II.C.2 for details. The topic can come either through the last Chapters in the textbook, as explained in Agenda 2, or from the "Issues" sheet handed out and discussed in class.
  3. Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET)
  4. Topics we will cover in class tonight:
    1. Social issues - Artificial Intelligence
    2. Computer Storage and Connections
    3. Microsoft Access (database)
    4. Computer Programming
  5. Social issues - Artificial Intelligence (handout)
  6. Computer Storage and Connections (QBASIC handout)
  7. Microsoft Access (database)
  8. Review for Final. Computers and Society is not a spectator sport!
    1. There are still people having trouble making and naming folders and sub-folders. This needs practice; there is no substitute for practice on your own. Some people are still apparently confused about the difference between files and folders.
    2. Some people are having trouble open applications (Word, Excel, Access) either with a file, or starting a new file. Here is an outline, but there is not substitute for practice on your own.
      1. To open an application with an existing file, EITHER
        1. Use Windows to find the file that you want to open in the application, and double-click on it (best to double-click on the icon for the file, not the letters)
          OR
        2. Open the application from the Start menu OR desktop icon, then use the menu item File > Open to find and open the file that you want.
      2. To start a new file in an application, there is only ONE way - open the application from the Start menu OR desktop icon. The application will open with a new file showing (although technically it is not a file until you save it). If you already have the application open with another file, and you want a new file, use the menu item File > New...
  9. Lab 13. Work from the QBASIC programming handout from last week.
    1. Go to the GST 2710 web site to download the QBASIC files. http://www.cll.wayne.edu/isp/gst2710
    2. If your mouse does not work with QBASIC:
      1. Use the <Alt> key to highlight or unhighlight the menu items. You can also use the <Esc> key to cancel the menus
      2. Type the highlighted or underlined character in a menu item to select it.
      3. Use the <Tab> key to go to the next section in a dialog, or to the next button, and <Shift><Tab> to go backwards
NOTE: 1, 2 and 3 work as keyboard alternatives to the mouse in Windows, also
      4. There is no Undo
      5. Save your file using the menu items File > Save As... and File > Save as normal
      6. Run your program using the menu item Run > Start
  10. Don't forget to Sign Out!
  11. Turning your computer off
    1. Save any files that you have worked on during the class and still have open
    2. Click on "Start" then Shut Down...
    3. Make sure that "Shut down the computer" is selected and click "Yes"
    4. Wait for the dialog "It is now safe to turn off your computer.", then turn off the power using the red switch under the desktop.

There is no assignment due next week, aside from Lab 13.
