Link back to course Welcome...
The ASCII and ANSI character sets are identical for character codes of 127 and less, which is the range we will be using in this course. The character codes of 31 and less are non-printing or control character codes. Windows uses the ANSI character set, which differs from the ASCII set for character codes of 128 and higher. ASCII uses these higher codes primarily for "graphics characters" like borders and corners, from "the old days" when graphics were drawn by printing characters to the screen / printer. In contrast, ANSI uses the higher codes for international characters such as ä and ©. For character codes of 127 and less, the ASCII and ANSI character codes are identical.
While you will use ASCII codes on tests, you will NOT be asked to memorize this table. If you are required to use the table, a copy will be provided.
