With one book published, and another forthcoming, Professor Friedlander established himself as a scholar in the field of modern American history. His first book, The Emergence of a UAW Local, published in 1975, was cited as a pioneer work in the field, and is still regularly cited and used as a textbook in labor history. He has spent many years as an activist and leading advocate for the urban mission of the university. He has also published articles, given presentations at national conferences, and performed research for the State of Michigan. His recent work is an exploration of the new Shamanism.
