Wayne State University’s College of Lifelong Learning's Interdisciplinary Studies Program (ISP) has opened many doors for me. I graduated from the program (formerly known as the Weekend College) in 1988. I was introduced to this program through an insert (flyer) in my Church’s Sunday schedule. My husband was enthusiastic and immediately checked the program out. Within two days, he had applied for admission and been accepted and was in class within a week! His first instructor made a positive impression on him. His enthusiasm and discussion of courses and activities caused me to begin thinking about returning to school. My employer at that time was Michigan Bell Telephone Company (now Ameritech). Thanks to Howard Finley’s marketing expertise, Michigan Bell employees were allowed to sign promissory notes for each semester, attend classes and pay after they received their marks. Michigan Bell paid 75% and employees paid 25%. This worked out well for me as my husband was in classes as well as my daughter. Since graduation from ISP I have continued taking classes. I am now enrolled in the College of Education master’s program. I truly believe that "you are never too old to learn."
I retired from Michigan Bell in December 1983, and was hired at Wayne State in May 1987. This was a complete change of career for me, but the change has been highly rewarding. I like working with people, and I enjoy helping them. I feel especially happy when our students--including many who think they will never make it through the program--are successful.
